Storyteller

I haven't posted anything in awhile. Every time I come online I get stuck on FaceBook. But then I found this video. I couldn't send it to FaceBook so I thought I'd post it here.

Someday soon I hope Evie tells me stories like this. I swear, some of the best movies in the world started with a 4 year old just spouting off a pastiche.

I know that there's all kinds of stupid animal tricks out there on video. This one is just a cat being a cat. Same old same old. Until... Just watch. Try not to laugh if you can.

Where in the world is ...

some guy named Matt?

Everywhere!

Check out the Google map that dots all the places this guy goes. He's done this several years in a row now.

Baseball Tennis

Let's combine two great sports. This is either great athletics or some great special effects. I'll believe the first until proven otherwise.

And then there's this amazing baseball moment:

The Eagles Are Coming!

I saw the strangest thing while on a walk with Julie and Evie yesterday. I couldn't take a picture of it because it would not have turned out. So here is the best description I can come up with right now. Eagles. Multiple. Flying above my house. Or as Crush, the turtle from "Finding Nemo," says, "First you were like, 'Woah!' And then we were like, 'WOAH!' And then you were like, 'Woah....' "

We started walking and Evie pointed to the sky and said, "Birds."

I responded, "Yes, Evie, those are birds. We see them every time we... Wow, look at the wingspan on that seagull... ... Wait... that's not a seagull. Great Caesar's Ghost! That's a bald eagle!" And as we watched, we noticed that the eagle was being chased by crows and seagulls. Lots of them. Our eyes looked for the edge of the cloud of birds. In doing so, we saw another bald eagle.

"I've never seen two at once," Julie said. But there weren't just two. Count with me. One, two, three, four! Four large birds hovering and soaring in the wind above our block of Grand Ave. Two were for sure bald eagles, the other two didn't have distinct white-feathered heads, so I don't know if they were hawks or eagles or men in costumes.

All of these large birds of prey were being squawked at by the crows and seagulls. They kept dive-bombing from above and behind the eagles. But the large birds just hovered or turned slightly or flapped a little to stay in place.

I'm curious what they were doing here. They were facing West - into the wind - toward the Navy base/water. Perhaps there was a massive amount of mice that came out to celebrate the Summer Solstice and the eagles were waiting until they got hammered enough to swoop down for an easy dinner. They - being intelligent birds - would know that they had plenty of daylight to watch this rodent celebration. It was all a matter of waiting for the right time to crash the party.

The other birds - scavengers that they are - did not like the fact that the varsity birds were trying to take the prime meat. They, too, only had to wait for the right time to jump into the mouse party. Only, they weren't hunters. They had to wait longer for the mice to get into an accident while driving home drunk.

I've officially taken this from "cool sighting" to "stupid story." Sorry. If I see the eagles again, I'll try to get my camera and capture it.

Father's Day

I just finished celebrating my second Father's Day. It's weird to think that next year I'll have two little goobers running and/or crawling and/or sitting around the house. Evie's been such a blessing and a joy in our home. I'm excited to see the dynamic when Cameron enters stage-left this August.

I could go off about the responsibility of fatherhood and how scared out of my wits I get at the thought of trying to be a good dad. But instead I want to put a video link to one of the funniest movies ever. I got this movie for Father's Day. So now I'm going to force all my friends and family to come over and watch it.

Tree Thievery

I knew it was illegal to steal trees. But this article used a term I hadn't noticed before -- "first-degree theft." First-degree theft? Is there such thing as "second-degree theft"? How about "third-degree"? At what point are you allowed to say, "Oops, I accidentally stuck that in my pocket as I walked out the door"?

Port Orchard is nice. I can't believe someone would want to steal trees from there.

Two heads are better than one

...especially if you switch the two heads.

As a semi-avid Photoshopper, I notice the little things. In this case the head transfer is nearly seamless. The only thing I would have done was make the baby-head bigger. But I absolutely love the dad-head. Looks like a crazy midget attacking a tiny city.

This will be great in a punk/funk/rock band. Or... I don't know. All I know is: I'm getting one.

When the "brothers that be" sat down to write this cartoon they must have been drinking some amazing Red Bull.

Definitely in my top 10 of all things Homestar Runner.

The Future

Happy New Year.

Found this video about the future of our highways from 1958. They actually believed that "The Jetsons" was a future reality TV series.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium

I love Dustin Hoffman. To be honest, I'm not sure how many movies I've seen him in. The most memorable part for the man has been that of Captain Hook in the movie Hook. (I guess he's the title role then.) I'm sure there's a lot of makeup on the guy but it's difficult to tell who the actor is. That - to me - is a high mark of a good actor or actress. Look to some of his smaller roles. You watch a movie starring Dustin Hoffman and you know it's him. But your brain quickly passes that fact and accepts that his character is real and alive and seperate from the actor.

Well, he did it again with Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. A delightful movie that gives nearly every plot point away in the trailer. But I didn't go to see the story as much as I went to see the characters: Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and the always dry Jason Bateman. (He was on "Little House on the Prarie," did you know?)

I was surprised. Actually, I was caught off gaurd. There were some very deep concepts about life and death running through the story that made me think, "This is rated 'G'?" I've always assumed a "G" rating allowed you to throw your kid in front of a TV for a half hour and then let them run in the yard. You start throwing "PG" on a movie when the kid starts asking, "Daddy, what's 'dying' mean?"

"Well, Evie. That's what you do to cloth to make it different colors. Or your aunt Camille does to hair."

Truly it was a great movie. All in all, worth the matinee or renting. The sound design was good (as any larger-budget movie should be) but not to the point that you need the high-def speakers and theater surround-sound. The drama was fantastic. The comedy was clean and funny. The story kept moving. The journey was about life in both the real and fantastic worlds. The themes of faith and belief rang true.

So there you go. I hope to throw more of these up as time goes on. I've yet to really see or do things that send me to the computer to write about. But movies...

I am a critic. What can I say. I like to see and I like to respond.

How often should I be here?

Your Brain is Blue

Of all the brain types, yours is the most mellow.
You tend to be in a meditative state most of the time. You don't try to think away your troubles.
Your thoughts are realistic, fresh, and honest. You truly see things as how they are.

You tend to spend a lot of time thinking about your friends, your surroundings, and your life.

I'm digging the quizzes. I've gotten the most responses to the quizzes. What color brain do you have?
